Unconventional Ways to
Promote Your Website
by Rena Larrañaga
Feb. 9, 2002
We all know that without traffic,
your website won't make you much money. Besides the traditional
methods of posting to newsgroups and submitting to search engines,
here are a few ideas you may not have thought of to help get
your website noticed.
- Mention your home page on
your voice mail or answering machine message. This is especially
true of your business phone line. If new customers are calling
you but can't reach you, at least they'll be able to find you
online while waiting for your callback.
- Print your web address on
T-shirts and hats. Consider having jackets made with your company
and website embroidered on the back. Make your family walking
billboards!
- Engrave your web address on
pencils and hand them out at work. Give them to your kids to
take to school. Hand them out to trick-or-treaters at Halloween.
- Print your web address on
your next batch of checks. Your checks get seen by a lot of people
on their way through processing.
- Use cups and napkins with
your web address on them at your next party. Your guests will
be reminded of what you do, and may need your products/services
themselves, or know someone who does.
- Use your car as a billboard.
Get magnetic signs for the doors and window decals or bumper
stickers for the back. Every time you drive around doing errands,
you'll be marketing your website.
- Got business cards? Is there
writing on the back? If not, there should be. Many folks turn
the cards over the minute you hand them one. Make computer labels
with your web address and stick them on the back of your existing
cards.
- Speaking of cards, if you
send Christmas cards or letters to a list of people, print your
company name and web address on the envelope or card. Maybe you'll
get some referrals that way.
- Mail simple postcards to a
list of potential clients. On the card, print your web address
prominently. Decide whether you want to add more writing, or
just let their curiousity get the best of them.
- If your website is a portfolio
of your creative work, consider downloading your entire site
and burning it onto a CD. Mail this electronic portfolio to potential
clients.
With a little brainstorming
you can think of many creative opportunities to promote your
website.
